I recently finished a Pieter Bruegel the Elder study and artwork using ‘Dutch Proverbs’ as a reference. I was submerged by his Netherlandish style. Coincidentally after I finished it this video populated on my feed. Bruegel the Elder’s attention to detail and “the life of his characters” jumps out at me. But there is more because of his purpose and meaning behind his work makes you think.

Methinks furries might have the right idea for solving the uncanny valley issue... I'm talking expressive Daft Punk faceplates for every machine.

IDK. Nice attempt, But this Ain't It. I appreciate and applaud the scientific, and academic exploration of these lost art pieces. I feel the grief of what was lost to time. It reminds us of the temporal nature of art and then, reminds us of our own mortality. Art is beautiful and precious because it can be lost, and because it does degrade. The reproductions look flattened, and the figures look like cartoon cut outs. It overall does NOT look like Gustav Klimt's work. At first, when comparing the B&W photo to the color reproduction, you feel dazzled, but with any scruitany, the feeling wears off and leaves you feeling cheated and like something is "off." This is probably due to a painting being reproduced from a photograph. The difference between looking at fine art in a glossy magazine, then comparing it to an artwork IRL. There is a loss of the subtlety of the brushwork, interaction with light and shadow, and the lack of gold-leaf and other mixed media. GK's work is full of gold leaf, mixes of varnishes, matte vs glossy surfaces. Interactions with light, mood, tone, and color. This is more of an academic experiment, lovingly handled, and I would say is a tribute to GK's work, rather than a true or definitive reproduction. It's like having a memorial portrait at a funeral, next to the corpse, but everyone at the funeral knows neither the corpse or the memorial portrait do any sort of justice to the person they once knew when they were alive. And in that way, aren't all reproductions of art similar?
